Admissions to the Master of Arts in Teaching
The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program is designed for individuals who have completed a bachelor’s degree in a content area and are seeking initial teacher certification to share their knowledge in a PreK–12 setting. This graduate program leads to a master’s degree and supports students seeking their Texas teacher certification.
When is the Baylor MAT Application Due?
Elementary Education Applicants are Summer Start only.
Priority Application Deadline for Summer Start is February 1st
Final Application Deadline for Summer Start is April 1st
Middle or Secondary Education Applicants may begin Summer or Fall terms.
Summer Start: Priority Deadline is February 1st. Final Deadline is April 1st
Fall Start: Priority Deadline is June 1st. Final Deadline is August 1st
How Do I Start My Application?
Prospective applicants can begin by submitting their application to Baylor University Graduate School. To be fully admitted to the MAT program, students must be accepted by the Baylor Graduate School and the School of Education's Educator Preparation Programs.

Application Checklist
The following application materials are required to be submitted through the Baylor Graduate School Application.
- A Personal Statement (Submitted under "Writing Sample", 2-5 pages)
- A Current Resume
- Two Letters of Reference
- Unofficial Transcripts*
*Upon admittance, official transcripts with undergraduate degree conferral must be submitted prior to starting the program.
What Academic Qualifications are Required?
To be eligible for admission to the MAT program, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Overall GPA of 2.75 or higher
- Content Area GPA of 2.75 or higher
- 24 Credit Hours Completed in Content-Specific Coursework
- Applies to applicants seeking middle or secondary certification areas.
- Must include at least 12 upper-level hours (Junior or Senior level coursework)
What Happens After I Submit My Graduate School Application?
Once the Graduate School application has been submitted, the Curriculum & Instruction Graduate Faculty will conduct a preliminary review. If accepted to continue, students will be invited to take the diagnostic TExES content exam(s) for their designated teaching area(s), and may receive an invitation for a faculty interview.
