Curriculum & Instruction Specializations
The requirements below apply to both the MA in Curriculum and Instruction and the MSEd in Curriculum and Instruction. Students will complete 12 hours in their specialization area. Specialization areas include:
- English Education
- Informal Education
- Literacy and Reading Education
- Mathematics Education
- Science Education
- Social Studies Education
- Technology Education
- Other approved focus areas.
Master of Science in Education in Curriculum & Instruction
The Master of Science in Education (MSEd) is a professional degree designed to improve educational practice and to provide preparation for continued graduate study in education. Students must earn a minimum of 36 hours with a minimum of a 3.0 GPA required for graduation.
Required Courses
Students are required to earn 18 hours of core curriculum:
- EDC 5303: Models of Teaching and Learning
- EDC 5321: Contemporary Curriculum-Designing and Implementing
- EDC 5370: Applications of Technology to Teaching and Learning
- EDC 5348: Issues in Curriculum Development
- EDC 5391: Social Foundations of Education
- EDC 5311: Introduction to Qualitative and Quantitative Research OR EDC 5335: Research in Education
Electives
Masters of Science in Education students have the opportunity to take 6 credit hours of approved electives at the 5000-level.
Other Requirements
A written and oral Comprehensive Examination upon program completion is required for the Master’s degree.
Master of Arts in Curriculum & Instruction
The Master of Arts degree is designed to develop a scholarly understanding of educational thought and practice. It seeks to prepare students for continued graduate study in a research program. Students must earn a minimum of 33 hours with a minimum of a 3.0 GPA required for graduation.
Required Courses
Students are required to earn 15 hours of core curriculum from the following:
- EDC 5303: Models of Teaching and Learning
- EDC 5321: Contemporary Curriculum-Designing and Implementing
- EDC 5370: Applications of Technology to Teaching and Learning
- EDC 5348: Issues in Curriculum Development
- EDC 5391: Social Foundations of Education
- EDC 5311: Introduction to Qualitative and Quantitative Research OR EDC 5335: Research in Education
Thesis Preparation (MA Only)
Master of Arts students are required to earn 6 credit hours towards their thesis and defense.

Other Requirements
Students in the Master of Arts program are required to complete an oral exam to defend their thesis and final approval of their thesis prior to graduation.
