BSEd in Middle/Secondary Education

The Secondary Education major is ideal for individuals with a strong interest in teaching students in a specific subject matter. The program prepares highly qualified teachers in these certification areas:

  • English, Language Arts, Reading
  • Mathematics for Middle Grades (4-8)
  • Mathematics for Secondary Grades (7-12)
  • Science
  • Social Studies (history)

Graduates earn a BSEd and may choose to prepare for secondary certification (7-12) or middle grades certification (4-8) in their specific subject area. The program can be completed during the standard four-year collegiate experience.

Official admission to the Teacher Preparation Programs occurs at the end of the sophomore year, when formal application for acceptance is submitted.

The BSEd in Middle/Secondary Education offers

Faculty-guided Field Experiences

Field experiences begin the first semester and are layered with progressively more complex situations, so that preservice teacher candidates have sustained opportunities to deepen and expand their knowledge for the subject and effective teaching practices. Field experiences culminate in a yearlong teaching internship that makes Baylor graduate uniquely qualified to assume a position of leadership in teaching.

Engaged Faculty

Students are guided by passionate and knowledgeable faculty who have extensive classroom teaching experience, teacher education experience, and deep content knowledge in their fields.

High Demand for Graduates

Because of the rigor of the program and the stellar reputation of Baylor University in teacher preparation, graduates are in high demand. They are highly recruited by top school districts, and they make an immediate impact on the campuses.

Teaching Abroad

Study abroad programs in the School of Education offer undergraduates the opportunity not only to learn while in another country, but also to teach.
