Carlson Coogler, Ph.D.

  • Assistant Professor

A qualitative methodologist, researcher, teacher, and artist with a background in the language arts, education, science, and philosophy, Dr. Carlson H. Coogler situates herself both within and across academic categories. Accordingly, her work engages with the possibilities and challenges of making meaning in light of—not despite—difference, while navigating multiplicity, tension, and paradox in academic life and beyond. Most often, this work focuses on methodological literacies, artful inquiry, qualitative pedagogy and mentoring, and ethics.

After graduating with her doctorate in educational research from the University of Alabama in 2024, Dr. Coogler was honored to receive two Outstanding Dissertation of the Year awards: the first from a university-wide award at the University of Alabama and the second from the American Educational Research Association’s (AERA) Qualitative Research SIG.

She has been the co-editor of two special issues on artful inquiry—one in Qualitative Inquiry and the other in International Review of Qualitative Research (IRQR); she also co-edited a book on academic mothering. Her individual or collaborative work has been published in Qualitative Inquiry, International Review of Qualitative Research, Reconceptualizing Educational Research Methodology, Art/Research International, Journal of Curriculum and Pedagogy, and more.

Prior to coming to Baylor, Dr. Coogler was selected as an NSF CADRE Fellow (2018-2019) and an SEC Emerging Scholar (2023-2024); served in multiple roles, including chair, of the QR SIG’s Graduate Student Committee (2021-2024); earned her M.S.E. in Secondary Education; and taught doctoral courses in Qualitative Interviewing, Narrative Interviewing, Philosophy of Inquiry, and other topics.

Currently, Dr. Coogler is Chair of the Communication Committee of AERA’s Division D and is serving as a member on the Mentoring Committee and the Travel Award Committee for the QR SIG.
